IPANET - Establishment of a Volunteer Network for the Important Plant Areas in Turkey

Turkey is one of the richest countries in terms of plant diversity with over 11000 species and 33% of which are endemic to the country. In the past, DHKD has identified and published a total of 144 Important Plant Areas. IPA book provides essential information on plant conservation in Turkey where huge gaps in knowledge and practice exist. The aim of this project is to activate multi-stakeholder platforms to influence the decision-making processes involved in natural-resources management and in particular those pertaining to globally important plants in Turkey.

In the project, 9 Important Plant Areas across Turkey have been identified as pilot sites.

1.Ergene Basin IPA (Edirne and Kırklareli)
2.Ömerli Basin IPA (Istanbul)
3.Uludağ IPA (Bursa)
4.Çoruh Valley IPA (Erzurum and Artvin)
5.Baba Mountain IPA (Muğla)
6.Lara-Perakende Sand Dunes IPA (Antalya)
7.Ahir Mountain IPA (Kahramanmaraş)
8.Erciyes Mountain IPA (Kayseri)
9.Çıldır Lake IPA (Kars and Ardahan)

Through participating in the IPANET, local people will be trained and motivated to influence decision-making on the issue of natural-resources management and in particular on plant resources through activities such as lobbying, community development, formal and non-formal education, production of educational materials and programmes and citizen science activities (i.e. taking inventories, monitoring). The project expects enhanced visibility and capacity of DHKD to actively influence political decision-making processes (with regards to sustainable use of plant resources), an operational IPA volunteer network and enhanced acceptance by governmental institutions (responsible for biodiversity conservation) for working with NGOs and civil society.

There are several partners of the project both from Turkey and the Netherlands.
